Amidst the mountains of South Tyrol, in the Ladin village of La Val, the musical journey of baritone Andrè Schuen began. Raised trilingually in Ladin, Italian and German, his diverse cultural background is reflected in a repertoire that ranges from the German Lied repertoire to major operatic and concert roles. He initially pursued a career as a cellist before turning to voice and studying at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, where he worked with Horiana Brănișteanu and Wolfgang Holzmair. Following his graduation, he became a member of the ensemble at Graz Opera. Today, he is a sought-after artist on the world’s leading opera, concert and recital stages.
The 2026/27 season is marked by a strong presence on the operatic stage. At the Staatsoper Unter den Linden’s Festtage, Andrè Schuen returns as Wolfram in Wagner’s Tannhäuser, this time under the musical direction of Christian Thielemann. He then makes his role debut at the Vienna State Opera as Frank/Fritz in Korngold’s Die tote Stadt. At the Teatro Real Madrid, he returns as Wolfram in a new production of Tannhäuser, directed by David Hermann and conducted by Gustavo Gimeno.
Another major focus of the season is his artist portrait at the Wiener Konzerthaus, comprising eight concerts throughout the season and showcasing the breadth of his repertoire. The series opens in November with a recital of songs and arias alongside Nikola Hillebrand and Julius Drake, followed by Mahler songs with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under Petr Popelka. Around the turn of the year, he joins the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and Manfred Honeck for Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. In February, he performs Schubert’s Winterreise with his long-standing recital partner Daniel Heide. The portrait concludes in June with Britten’s War Requiem, performed with the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien and the Wiener Singakademie under Marin Alsop.
Andrè Schuen also maintains a strong international concert presence throughout the season. In January, he performs Mahler’s Rückert Lieder with the NHK Symphony Orchestra under Antonello Manacorda in Tokyo; later in the season, he returns to the work in Winterthur with the Musikkollegium Winterthur under Roberto González-Monjas.
As an opera singer, Andrè Schuen is a regular guest at leading international houses including the Bavarian State Opera, Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Teatro Real Madrid and Teatro alla Scala in Milan, as well as at the Salzburg Festival.
Lied is equally central to Schuen’s artistic profile. Together with pianist Daniel Heide, he regularly appears at leading recital venues around the world. Schubert’s major song cycles occupy a particularly important place in their work, while Schuen’s repertoire extends from Schumann, Brahms, Wolf and Mahler to music by contemporary composers such as Thomas Larcher.
His close artistic partnership with Daniel Heide is also documented by an extensive discography. Their recording of Schubert’s Winterreise on Deutsche Grammophon received the Opus Klassik Award in 2026. In October 2026, CAvi will release a new joint album featuring selected songs by Gustav Mahler.
