Tareq Nazmi is one of the leading basses of his generation. He studied voice in Munich with Edith Wiens and Christian Gerhaher, and privately with Hartmut Elbert. After starting his career at the Bavarian State Opera’s Opera Studio, he became a member of the ensemble until 2016. Since then, he has performed at major international opera houses. His breakthrough came as the Speaker (The Magic Flute) at the Salzburg Festival 2021, followed by acclaimed appearances as Sarastro, King Heinrich (Lohengrin), Alvise (La Gioconda), Gurnemanz (Parsifal), Banco (Macbeth), and Ferrando (Il trovatore).

In the 2025/26 season, he appears as Rocco (Fidelio) and the Commendatore (Don Giovanni) at the Vienna State Opera, Zaccaria (Nabucco) in Berlin, and debuts as Daland (The Flying Dutchman) in Tokyo. He tours the U.S. with Verdi’s Requiem, records Haydn’s Creation for Deutsche Grammophon, and returns to Vienna for Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 under Andris Nelsons. He is also in high demand as a concert and lieder singer, most recently performing Schubert’s Winterreise with Gerold Huber in Tokyo, London, Cologne, and at the Schubertiade.
