Maximilian Schmitt studied voice with Anke Eggers in Berlin, trained at the Bavarian State Opera’s Opera Studio, and was an ensemble member at the Nationaltheater Mannheim. He gained international acclaim as Tamino (Amsterdam), Idomeneo (Strasbourg), Don Ottavio (Vienna), and Pedrillo (Milan under Zubin Mehta). Recent highlights include his debut as Siegmund (Die Walküre) under Kent Nagano; in 2025/26 he will reprise the role in concert with SWR Symphony Orchestra under François-Xavier Roth and make his role debut as Lohengrin in Hanover.
He has appeared with the Cleveland Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic, Concertgebouworkest, and Gewandhausorchester, collaborating with conductors such as Petrenko, Luisi, Welser-Möst, Currentzis, and Jacobs. In 2025/26, engagements include Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, Haydn’s Creation, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and Beethoven’s Fidelio. Lieder recitals, including Schubert’s Winterreise, remain central to his artistic work. His discography includes a recent recording of Die Walküre as Siegmund.
